Barbel

Source

The Barbo is an autochthonous species of the Iberian Peninsula. It prefers the deepest and fastest river currents with stone or gravel bottoms. It feeds mainly on invertebrates, such as small crustaceans, insect larvae and mollusks. The spawning occurs from May to July after Barbo has migrated up the river. The eggs are poisonous.

Geographic Distribution

Açores and Madeira, in the Adrão, Ancora, Arade, Ave, Cávado, Couro, Douro, Estorãos, Guadiana, Lima, Lis, Minho, Mira, Mondego, Paiva, Sado, Sorraia, Sousa, Tâmega, Tejo and Vouga rivers. Also in the Carreiras, Foupana, Monchique, Odelouca, Torgal, Vale de Ferro and Vascão streams, and in the dams of Aguieira, Alto Lindoso, Arade, Belver, Bemposta, Crestuma Lever, Ermal, Funcho, Régua and Torrão. And still in Paúl do Taipal and in the lagoons of Mira and Óbidos.

Characteristics

The preferred habitat presents areas with high riparian coverage of permanent watercourses with marked lotic characteristics (with currents) and reduced water instability. The common beard prefers deeper sections, with more oxygen and fine substrate. Juveniles occur in zones with some depth, near the margin and without current, avoiding habitats with a lot of tree cover. This species is an active swimmer with great ability to travel.

feeding

The common beard presents a generalist and opportunistic feeding. It feeds mainly on plant material (filamentous plants and algae) and larvae of aquatic insects, in particular dipterans (chironomids and simids), ephemeroptera (caenids), plecoptera, coleoptera, hemiptera, molluscs, mites and tricoptera (hydropsiquids).Ocosionally it ingests sand, cladocerans, terrestrial insects (formicides) and seeds.Larger fish feed on plant material and occasionally on other fish. In dam it feeds mainly on larvae of dipterans, planktonic crustaceans and crustaceans and some filamentous algae.

reproduction

At the time of breeding, from late April to June/July, males display white scores around the muzzle designated as bridal tubers. It spawns at the end of spring or during summer, with a capacity of about 8,000 eggs on average, in rocky and sandy bottom areas and shallow but oxygen-rich areas.

Minimum capture size: 20 cm.
Fishing period: 1 June to 14 March.
