Corvina Fishing Tips

Today in PescaCosmar we bring you a new fishing guide, this time our main species will be the corvina. A delicious fish, which will bring us exciting moments and teach us an amazing fight. There are many things that you should know before venturing into the croaker fishing, so we will provide it with the following manual.

Knowing the Corvina

Let us know a little about our friend the corvina, it is a fish of salt water and white meat, belonging to the family Sciaenidae, in the Mediterranean sea and atlantico is known to the corvina like  sciaena umbra, or argyrosomus regius, there are many varieties of this species.

Habitad

It can be found throughout the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Corvina is a fairly active fish that can be found in various depths, from 15 to 300 meters deep depending on the season and reproductive cycle. However they tend to prowl the sandy bottoms near the coasts. Only the youngest specimens prefer the waters with low salinity and predominant vegetation.

Feeding

The Corvina is a carnivorous predator of voracious appetite. It feeds mainly on trawlers: mollusks, crustaceans, worms and small bottom fish.

Appearance

It has a silver color in gradient, darker at the top and a little lighter in the belly, its dorsal and anal fins are small and have a yellow placement that distinguishes them from other similar species. It has narrow and small head as well as mouth. The average catches are about 30 cm long and 2 kilos in weight. However they can grow enough to exceed 12 kilos.

Where to find them?

Corvinas are not capricious species, in fact they travel in big schools to hunt food in group and to fulfill an efficient reproductive cycle. So they may seem easy to get, but when we talk about sport fishing, croaker fishing becomes a little more complex, you have to be very observant and patient.

In spring the corvina shoals approach the coast looking for warm waters to favor reproduction, and there they stay until the end of summer after having spawned. The group migrates into the depths in autumn and summer to maintain the temperature. However, some specimens follow different patterns of migration, remaining on the coast most of the year, whether due to the temperature of the waters, the sea currents or the ease of finding food.

In short, spring and summer are ideal for finding corvinas near the coast, while autumn and winter it is more productive to look for them further away.

More favorable fishing equipment for croaker fishing

First of all you will have to define if you will catch croakers to spinning or trolling from boat, or from the coast to Surfcasting, because the equipment varies completely according to the technique that you prefer to use.

Normally the surfcasting in spring and summer will bring you more success, while in autumn and winter the boat will be almost obliged.

Fishing Rods for Corvinas

Although they congregate on the coast, the corvinas are sometimes located at a certain depth away from the beach, so if you plan to capture them to surfcasting, you require a long, sturdy reed, between 3.50 m and 4.20 m. In contrast the cane of boat will be much shorter, prowling the 2 meters. In both cases you should use light reeds with smoothly sliding rings and a quick toe that detects subtle bites.

Fishing reels more suitable for the corvina

The thread capacity for the reels used in surfcasting should exceed 200 meters, while the boat capacity should cover at least 300 meters. As for the brake, you will not need anything too powerful, since the chopped croaker is quite soft and you have to let it get tired before you pick it up. However you should have the option of micro adjusted brake to graduate to your taste collection of the catch.

Needless to say, the reel you use has to be light, comfortable and resistant to salt, totally sealed or protected from water and sand.

Fishing lines for the corvina

The twisted wires rounded 0,20mm to 0,26mm have great advantages for fishing corvinas one hand have much resistance and the other diameter is thin and can play with a capacity greater thread on the reel. In addition to having little flexibility, we can notice much more clearly the bite of the croaker.

In relation to the bass line, it is important to use a thicker line in the case of using crustaceans as baits, since during the haul, the bait could be destroyed. In our online fishing shop we recommend SUFIX 832 ADVANCED yarn    that has great resistance to abrasion and therefore greater durability.

Emerillones to avoid tangles

Whether you use natural bait or decoys, do not forget to use emerillones to remove turns, to separate them from the mother line. In this way you prevent the movement of the bass line in the water, creating entanglements in the main line.

The best fishing hooks for the corvina

When we go fishing for corvinas, the hook often hits rocks or hard bottoms, while the fish, being stealthy, has to be caught at the slightest contact. Thus the bait is crucial in fishing because it requires two elements sometimes contrary: Many shock resistance and a dangerous edge. While the curvature should be closed and arched to prevent it from opening, because when feeling in danger, the croaker’s swimming is really powerful.

Tips for fishing for croaker

  1. Choco and American worm are the most used baits and most recommended for fishing of corvina.
  2. Do not pick up the line with too much force, since the head of the croaker is very soft and we could rip it and lose the catch.
  3. Do not let the corvina swim too much once it bites, adjusts the brake gradually to a low power and sees it attracting little by little and with much patience.
  4. It brakes smoothly and progressively to prevent the line from being cut.
  5. Constantly check the tip of your fishing rod, as the croaker is reluctant and erratic in its bite.
  6. If you feel a violent blow, pick up the line with a certain amount of momentum, this will give the lure / bait more realism and attract the attention of several croakers at the same time.
  7. Put two or three hooks in your bass line, only if you have experience with the corvina, picking up a double will give you great moments of adrenaline when having to handle several fish at the same time.
  8. If you decide to use monofilament instead of braided, try to raise the tip of the cane towards the sky to ensure the nail of the fish.
  9. The corvina gets tired quickly, uses all its energy in the first rush of flight, so you have to wait a few minutes while you take the thread, then you will feel that it is still, at that moment you can start collecting, the fish will want to flee again but He will not have the same energy, let him swim until he is tired and he recovers.Continue the procedure at shorter intervals until the croaker is near the shore. When you feel in danger your last swim will be the most dangerous, do not lock the brake of the reel as it could escape at the last moment cutting the line, wait to have it completely out of the water.
  10. If the corvina swims at you to flee, you must act fast, you should not let it continue swimming, but you need the reel to pick up the line at high speed to regain tension in the line.
  11. If the corvinas are breeding near the shore, (dipping their heads in the sand for food.) Use a bait similar to what you are looking for and try to give it a slow movement with the reed, that will give you more attention and Do not feel suspicious with a strange lure or bait.
  12. Do not despair if they do not bite instantly, croaker fishing requires a lot of patience, there are many reasons why you do not get a bite, it is seldom because you are not doing a good job. However you can try different areas from time to time or change the technique of the cane to determine if there are greater possibilities of changing zone or technique.
  13. Locate the line bass in the areas where the currents converge, since the corvinas like the places where the sand is revolted.
  14. Do not use flashy, noisy or extravagant lures, since the corvina is very nervous and suspicious.
  15. If the bait is not heavy enough to reach the bottom, use a suitable lead.
