Fish on Cold Days … Is Cold!!!

Brazilian regions where winter is more rigorous, as the Southeast and South, hook a bully can be an arduous and even frustrating. The cold interferes in the lives of aquatic animals in the same way as in men and other land animals. So, every fisherman may have already noticed that the fish are less active with the low temperatures, especially tropical and subtropical species, accustomed to the climate of “Sun and beach” almost all year. But what happens to them?

In short, it’s very simple: in the cold, the fish reduce all the activities of the body, especially the food. With the low temperatures, they swim less and sometimes stop completely to eat. Thus, there is no bait that fish bite, which makes fishing in winter an adventure without guarantees good results.

According to Cepta researcher (Research Center of tropical fish), Osmar Cantelmo, all fish species have a biological characteristic that causes this whereabouts tea in rivers and reservoirs during the cold. The fish, he says, are “pecilotérmicos”, that is, the body temperature varies according to the temperature variations of the water-cooled water, the body of the fish cool together; If warm, heats up next. The only option to “control” the temperature for the fish is up or down in the water column of the River (on the surface, the water is warmer because of direct sun; at the bottom of the River, the water is colder; and so, the fish is a time to be more comfortable.

Ideal Temperature

All animals, including humans, need a “perfect temperature” for the proper functioning of the body, called “thermal comfort”. In humans, this temperature is around 36.5 degrees; above it is a fever and below is chill and jiggles. Among the fish, pacus, us for example, the ideal temperature for the thermal comfort is around 26 degrees centigrade; in tambaquis, between 27 and 29 degrees; the Golden, 25 degrees and so on. As the fish are at the mercy of external temperature variations (pecilotérmicos), cold winter waters they lose the ideal operating point of the system.

Depending on how much the temperature down, the fish can not resist and die, as occurred in 2000 at the Porto Primavera dam, President Epitácio. There, after a cold front, there was a large-scale tucunaré, a tropical fish in the Amazon, whose “thermal comfort” is around 25 degrees centigrade. To quote another example, the gold stop totally to eat if the temperature of the water hitting the 18 degrees; from that point down, the fish begins to suffer with diseases until death.

River Fish

Knowing all this, it is easy to conclude that the non-tropical species, imported from cold countries, are more resistant to winter and therefore guarantee more the good fishing at that time. Trout, for example, is sourced from cold countries, such as Canada and United States and your thermal comfort is around 15 to 17 degrees; I mean, can “snow” that the trout will love. The black bass is another imported which resists cold and keeps the fight with the fisherman; tilapias and the “catfish” American are other good fishing options in the cold. However, even among the tropical species, there are those fish that have greater versatility with the temperatures and react well even when the water cools. In the case of corvinas or sooty albatrosses.
