How to Have a Successful Fishing Trip

Today in PescaCosmar we are going to talk about the fishing of the Bonito, a powerful tuna that attacks fish mortals in the summer and fall seasons. We will prepare you to understand your behavior and get successful days from Bonito to troll.

Knowing the species

The Sardinian Sarda , better known as Nice Atlantic. It is a good predator that runs around the surface waters of the Atlantic. It is one of the most popular species in sport and commercial fishing due to its delicious meat and the great battle that presents.

Sizes

Normally it can measure up to 80 cm. Nevertheless some specimens of the East, they exceed the meter of length. Its maximum weight is around 10 kilograms. But catches normally range between 4 and 5 kilos.

Morphology

It has an elongated shape between robust and compressed, with dorsal fins almost united. Your body is covered with very small scales on the back and larger on the pectorals. Unlike tuna, its head is sharper. His lower jaw is more prominent and his teeth are rather tight backward.

Color

Its color is silver gray, with dark stripes staining from the back to the head, some more horizontal than others. Some specimens may have dark greenish or blue tones on the back and near the head. The belly is white with silver highlights.

Habitat

They like to travel long distances in surface waters. They never come too close to the coast, but are kept at a very far margin.

Feeding

It mainly feeds on small fish that travel in large schools. Such as sardine, anchovy and mackerel, although also calamaries often appear frequently in their diet.

biology

During spring and early summer they usually mate, then dropping the eggs on the surface. Since they are larvae the bonito travels great distances to find food and survive a medium temperature.

Other species

The sarda orientalis, or bonito bonito, is smaller and inhabits the Pacific Ocean. While the Sarda chilensis very similar to the previous inhabits the southwest of the Pacific.

What is the best fishing season in Bonito?

The best time to capture bonito is usually in the summer and early fall.  For after their mating season the appetite forces them to hunt more often. Following schools of gregarious fish to feed themselves, and thus to be supplied before their deep transfers by the Atlantic in the cold times. Where they will feed on plankton. However the Bonito fishery can yield moderately throughout the year.

As for the best time of day to catch them, it is usually from noon to sunset.  Since Bonito relies on its sense of sight to locate its prey.

The Fishing of the Beautiful

Note that in our description of the Bonito habitat we mention that it is far from the coast. So the only way we can get with these specimens is to board a boat and look for its fishing zone. Which are revealed by the seagulls, or if you have good sight, locating the schools of smaller fish.

The bonito fishing resembles the fishing of Dorado and Palometón. But there are some significant variations for one or the other species to prick your rig.

Baits and lures for Bonitos

The beauty of the pretty is that both the natural baits and the artificial lures are effective to tempt them. Special attention must be paid to lures so that they have a realistic appearance and that their swimming resemble more that of a wounded fish than of a fish fleeing, since the Beatitudes are astute and prefer to go for the weaker prey.

In PescaCosmar we recommend the Rapala X Rap Magnum, because it has the ideal characteristics that you need during the fishing of bonito: firstly, its hyperrealistic and beautiful design has no rival, second; Its colors are highly striking, third; His swim perfectly imitates a wounded and fourth fish; Works exceptionally at high or low speeds, which is quite difficult to get at other lures. Its bib also allows you to deepen up to 10 meters without needing to use additional depthers.

Fishing modalities of Bonito

For the sport fishing of bonito is usually used the mode of trolling and sometimes spinning, in case you want a more challenging and interesting battle. We recommend that you start with trolls at approximately 5 knots and that when you dominate this mode, locate and embark on fishing spinning.

Fishing from the Cute to Curricán

Once in the boat get away from the coast until reaching a depth of approximately 50 meters. In this area it is advisable to locate the schools of fish or seagulls that indicate the place where the Bonito is located.

Use light trolling equipment, making the most of your deck space, always placing the reeds on port and starboard, not in the stern. If it is a question of four reeds onwards, let go of the rigging from the inside to the outside, placing the lures more and more deeply, that is to say:

First make the hauls of the reeds furthest from the bow of the boat, letting the line extend about 150 meters, the lures of the reeds should be kept very close to the surface.

Then make the sets of the adjacent canes ensuring that their lures reach a depth of a little more than 5 meters to prevent them from getting entangled with others, and thus continue if you have more reeds on board a boat much larger.

The fishing rods should have a considerable progressive action, while the reel is recommended drum, with good capacity and millimetric adjustment brake. For the line the dacron of 0,80 mm will work of excellent form.

For the low of line it is indispensable to have fluorocarbon of 0,30 mm which becomes invisible under the water, effectively deceiving the marine predators.

If after a while you do not have much success with the bites you see deepening the lures, as the fishing areas of bonito are changing in a few hours.

How to pick it up?

You will know that the Bonito has been nailed when the line begins to leave wildly, so be careful not to escape.

Take the cane and check the strength of the fish, if you pull a lot of the line loose a bit but in a slow way to get tired, once you lose your strength, go up the pointer of the cane, then go down and pick several laps and so on , If the fish throws again, it releases a little and lets it get tired again, which will not take long.

The collection of bonito is quite demanding for the shoulders and arms, we recommend using a combat belt and physically prepare your body for the fishing days.

Once the fish loses the fight, pick up steadily, putting the thumb in the thread to collect evenly the line in the reel, avoiding future entanglements.

When the Bonito appears very close to our boat, it determines if its weight is light enough to raise it without assistance pulling the nylon with the hand. Otherwise use a hook to nail it and upload it on board.

It may be the case that the four rods are filled at the same time, or that the fisherman tires first than the fish, so that it takes enough people on board who can battle these fierce swimmers.

“We hope this little tutorial has pleased you, do not hesitate to write us if you want more details about fishing for beautiful spinning. See you soon and good fishing.”
