With its fulminant attacks, whiting is one of the most enjoyable fishing challenges in estuaries with artificial bottom baits. Here’s how to catch it with three different techniques, and remember: when catching one, never give up on the line or you’ll lose it!
One of the first whiting I caught with artificial bait was hooked by chance. He caught bass with a barb bait next to a slab, continually picking up the plug. A sudden stop at the pickup and a strong stride on the line was felt, immediately followed by violent jerks in the opposite direction. I held it steady, and moments later, a whiting-spot was emerging. He noted there one of the trademarks of this fish: the disproportionate power of their plucking. I then began to dedicate myself more and more to the different techniques to capture it. Besides exciting, it is a fishery full of surprises, since the same environments frequented by whiting are points of dwelling or passage of other species. The approaching phase of the year – late spring and practically all summer – is ideal to focus on the quest for brave whiting.
The coastal regions with stones in the background are the big stages for battles with whiting, especially whiting ( Mycteroperca acutirostris ), which can reach ten kilos. In estuarine and coastal regions, a four-kilogram sample is already considered a great trophy. To catch them inside bays, it is important that the water is clean, with a high degree of salinity. Just like their “cousins”, the groupers, they are able to migrate to areas closer to the bar or even to the open sea when dirty water, a fact caused by constant rainfall. Besides this important factor, the ambient temperature is also relevant: the hottest months of the year are the best for your fishing.
On eminently overcast days, fish activity appears to be larger, as occurs with other saltwater and freshwater species – apparently the absence of strong, direct light helps to disinhibit predators. There is also the atmospheric pressure factor, which normally remains more stable in days like this, which favors the fish feeding activity. Finally, on cloudy days, the wind action is less or even zero, helping greatly the progress of the fishery.
In the universe of baits with an unquestionable appeal to the whiting, especially in more “open” points, the class of plugs that fall most in the form of throwing of artificial baits is highlighted : crankbaits, both traditional “chubby” models as those of profile more elongated. Their common point is the long barb, responsible for a rapid sinking and intense vibration throughout the time they are collected. As the cranks are collected almost all the time, the attacks are accurate: the fish needs to snatch up the supposed prey to keep it from escaping.
Among the good points to “scratch” the background with a crankbait there are the rocky cliffs, the outskirts of islands, and the isolated rocks that rise in the middle of the bay. The depth can not be very large, something up to five meters. The different barb sizes regulate the depth that the baits will reach. The longer, deeper the bait will work, and the longer it gets, the more resistance it will suffer when pulled. The gathering is continuous, so that the bait is bumping into the stones. The barb itself protects, in a way, the garateias of the coils. Ideally, models that do not exceed local depth should be used; if the point is 3.5 meters, for example, the indicated one is to use baits that reach that depth or close to it, but do not exceed it. The sinking capacity is usually reported by the manufacturer on the bait pack itself.
